Spring Valley Retreat in Dullstroom

Spring Valley Retreat in Dullstroom

Spring Valley Retreat” is Mother Nature’s beauty at its best. If you are looking for a quiet, relaxed retreat away from the chaos of Jozi then “Spring Valley” is the place to be. If you are into fly fishing, the dam in front of the accommodation is great too. Dullstroom is also a mere 2.5hrs from JHB so its the ideal distance for a  weekend away.

There are 6 freestanding double wooden cabin rooms next to each other. The rooms are luxurious and beautiful. The bedroom has wall to wall glass sliding doors giving you a full view of the beautiful bushveld and dam. The bedroom has a double bed with fluffy, comfy white bedding. There is a day bed in the room as well as outside on the covered patio, I spent many hours lazing on the comfy patio daybed enjoying the peace and serenity. There are also wooden benches and tables on the patio. The entire cabin is open plan. The bathroom was probably the highlight of the cabin. There is a massive bathtub alongside the window with the same beautiful view as in the bedroom (take some bubble bath along for the ultimate relaxation). There is also a big shower. There is a gas geyser and therefore no need to stress about waiting for hot water or, more annoying, running out of hot water. The bathroom is also equipped with all the amenities on would need, like towels, shower gel, shampoo, shower caps, hand soap and lotion. It got pretty chilly at night so we were grateful for the panel heaters in the bedroom and bathroom as well as a dual control electric blanket. The bedrooms were definitely built with relaxation in mind.

The lodge is self-catering so between the rooms there is a free standing open plan living area that’s 5-star for sure. The area is very spacious with a kitchen, toilet, lounge and dining area inside. There is also a covered patio with a braai area, dining and a lounge area with a view of the fenced garden with stunning plants and water features (there is lavender everywhere, I can only imagine how heavenly it will be when in bloom). The kitchen was just amazing, it had everything we needed and more, there was enough crockery, cutlery, pots and pans, serving dishes, glasses, tot glasses and mugs for a soccer team. There was even and egg poacher for 15 eggs at once. The white counters with spotlights make the kitchen a treat, we actually spent a lot of time here. The gas stoves were elegant. Double fridges and a huge freezer. This is surely a dream kitchen that everyone would love to have. There is a fireplace near the lounge that is fully stocked with wood and firelighters daily, this kept the area toasty and comfortable at night.

The garden is fenced making this lodge a pet friendly accommodation option. We had lots of dog visitors, from Jeannette’s (the owner of Spring Valley) gorgeous Weimaraner’s to “Serious” the Scottie who lives on the farm at a neighbouring house by the 2nd dam.

I have to make special mention to the cleaning fairies. I have never been so spoilt in my life. They were waiting for us on arrival to help us unpack our cars and check if we were happy with our rooms. They basically took care of all the cleaning for all the time we were there. I call them fairies because we hardly noticed them come in and clean, we just walked into a clean area all the time. They were so unassuming which was wonderful, we were never rushed or made to feel uncomfortable. When we woke up in the morning the living area was already clean by 7:30am and as soon as we left our room for breakfast our rooms were cleaned. The staff were always so friendly, polite and helpful. They went out of their way to assist us in anyway.

My friends went fly fishing every day and caught at least a dozen and a half between them. The dam is strictly catch and release. It was fun watching the fish jump out the water every now and then to flirt with the fisherman. The dam is so beautiful, especially at sunset. We spent a lot of time chilling on the pier.

There are so many activities available:

  • Three large fishing dams that have won best fly fishing waters for a number of years at the prestigious Dullstroom Classic Fly-Fishing Competition.
  • Enjoy river fishing in the Crocodile River which runs through the farm.
  • Spring Valley also has a variety of game and birdlife including Zebra, Black Wildebeest, Blesbuck, Springbuck, Duiker and Mountain Reedbuck.
  • Canoeing and paddle boating on our lake.
  • Mountain biking along for adventurous biking trails on the farm.
  • Hiking trails where you can view countless species of birds, including Fish Eagles, Blue Cranes and Secretary Birds.
  • Picnic tables available across the retreat.
  • Ancient ruins located in our blue gum forest.

During the day we also went into town, about a 10min drive from the lodge. Dullstroom has a charm about her and it was fun to shop at the arts and craft stall, have some freshly made pancakes and have a drink while listening to a band.

What a laid back weekend this was, we returned to JHB rejuvenated and ready to take on the world again. I highly recommend “Spring Valley Retreat”. You have got to try it!

Sharing is caring... thanks!
